In this course, candidates will further their comprehension of the relationship between literacy and different subject areas within secondary education. Students will closely examine a range of different strategies for teaching reading available to the middle and high school teacher. We will examine a wide range of assessments and instructional methods to support the development of grade 6-12 learners experiencing difficulty with reading. In addition, the course focuses on the use and value of reading assessments, differentiation within the classroom, and the overall benefits of teaching literacy across content areas. The study and implementation of a wide range of assessments and how these build on and extend the methods to support literacy development will be explored throughout the course. In this course, we will investigate topics such as: fluency, decoding, comprehension, balanced literacy, close reading, scaffolding, differentiation, etc. Furthermore, we will discuss how to utilize specific reading strategies and skills within diverse content areas, as well as how to respond to the needs of those specific students with reading disabilities in our classrooms.
